The first six weeks

From the beginning, my recovery went better than expected!
The wave of support I received included much more than just well wishes and pictures of people in burgundy. I also received many cards, balloons, flowers, and other gifts throughout my first few weeks post-op.
When we got home from the hospital on Monday, December 17th, I was exhausted to say the least. My family got me settled, and then decorated my room for Christmas, and put all of my flowers and balloons out for me to see. I was brought most meals to help me avoid stairs and spent the first few days at home mostly in bed.
On Tuesday, after an hour, we finally got my hair combed and untangled and braided. This helped me feel even better! By the end of my first week home, stairs were easier and I was feeling stronger everyday. I even stopped taking pain medication by Christmas! My family came for Christmas, and everyone was impressed by how well I was doing.
I had my 20+ stitches removed the day after Christmas, and my hair cut short Dec. 27th. By New Years, I was pretty independent and was feeling awesome. My bruises took almost a month to heal completely, and my head wound had begun to heal nicely. By the end of January, I had decided to take the semester off from St. Norbert College per my doctor's recommendation. Even though I was doing really well, going back to school only 5 weeks after surgery would have been a major challenge.
Throughout my first six few weeks home, I received care packages and cards, something I did not expect to happen. After a few weeks, I had received puzzles, pajamas, stuffed animals, snacks, a hat, headbands, a blanket, and cozy socks. My favorite gifts were the giant stuffed dinosaur from my best friend Molly, a dog blanket, and four new pajama sets!
